Transporting animals

Passengers can transport small domestic animals, housed in cages, baskets or other types of pet carriers, that can be stored the same way as the passenger's luggage, and small dogs that can sit on a passenger's lap.

Large dogs travelling on trains must wear a muzzle, be kept on a short lead and sit or lie on the floor. Large dogs travel at half 2nd class fare, on international routes, a half fare according to the international tariff will apply.

Upon boarding the train carriage, passengers accompanied by large dogs must obtain consent from their fellow passengers. If your fellow passengers do not consent to the presence of your pet, then you should contact the train conductor or a member of the rail staff onboard who will take of the dog for the duration of the journey. Smaller animals may accompany you on most trains. Dogs can accompany passengers in sleeper cars or couchettes only if the passenger is alone in the compartment, or if the passenger has purchased extra space in the compartment. Animals are not permitted in the buffet car onboard any train service. Domestic and domesticated animals are not allowed on ICS trains. Guide dogs for the blind and for disabled people are the only exceptions. In this case, reservations are issued free of charge. Conditions for the transport of animals are mostly the same abroad as in Slovenia. Elsewhere in Europe however, the transportation of pets in sleeper cars and couchettes may be subject to different restrictions, depending on the rail carrier, therefore we recommend that you obtain detailed information on conditions of carriage from individual countries prior to starting your journey.

Animals cannot be transported to Norway, Finland, Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Irish Republic, Spain (except dogs in sleeper compartments), Morocco and Portugal. In Germany and Belgium dogs can be transported but must wear a muzzle and be kept on a lead.
