Travel by train to airports and seaports

Do you need to travel to an airport or a seaport abroad? Take a train, save money and arrive at the entrance.

In addition to the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, commonly known as Brnik Airport, more and more passengers from Slovenia travel from airports in Austria and even Germany. They usually reach them by our own cars, which also means higher costs. Travelling to the airports by train is the best alternative, especially since we can get very close to the airport entrance. From Slovenia you can travel by tran to the airports in Vienna, Graz, Munich and Frankfurt, to name the ones that we use the most for the long-haul destinations. Leave your car at home, buy a ticket and travel comfortably and affordably to the airport.

Graz Airport

The best way to reach the airport is from the main railway station in Graz, Graz Hbf. Buses operate from the railway station to the airport and back. The other alternative is to change to a local train at the Leibnitz railway station, which will take you directly to the airport, close to the Maribor – Graz railway line. There are frequent train services between Slovenia and Graz. Travelling by train is very affordable especally if you are using the Regio AS offer. This way you can purchase a through ticket, which you can use to travel to the airport by bus. For further information, please visit the official Graz Airport website www.flughafen-graz.

Wienna International Airport

Vienna can be reached from Ljubljana via Celje and Maribor and back, by seven scheduled trains. During the summer months you can travel to Vienna by taking an overnight train every Saturday night. Train from Slovenia arrive at the Vienna South Station - Wien Südbahnhof. A bus service operates from the station every 30 minutes (ÖBB Wienna Airport Lines). It will take about 20 minutes to reach the airport. The other option is to take the S-Bahn city train to the Wien-Mitte station and continue from there to the airport. From the Wien-Mitte station, you can also take the City Airport Train (CAT), which reaches Vienna International Airport in only 16 minutes. You can reach Munich Airport by train from Ljubljana via Jesenice and Salzburg. There are six pairs of train services operating between Ljubljana and Munich, three direct links, including the Lisinski night train. At Munich Central Station - München Hauptbahnhof – it is necessary to change to S-Bahn City train number 1. The Airport can also be reached by S-Bahn number 8 but you need to get off at the Munich East (München Ost) station. City trains offer very frequent service and the journey to the Airport takes about 40 minutes. Frankfurt Airport

The wealth of offers of the Frankfurt Airport can be viewed at the following website: www.frankfurt-airport.de. There are two railway stations at Frankfurt Airport. One is for local trains, whilst the other is for long-distance train routes. All high-speed ICE trains call at this station.

The train journey from Ljubljana to Frankfurt Airport takes around 10 hours, depending on which connection you choose. There are many connections, the most conducive are those made during the day which arrive at the airport in the evening, or those made by night which arrival at the airport in the morning.

Airplane an train

You can also choose to travel part of your journey by plane, and then proceed by train. When you arrive at your chosen destination by plane, you can then resume your journey by train, using a ticket already purchased in Slovenia. In such cases InterRail passes are especially suitable, particularly when you want to see more of the destination country or if you intend to stay for longer. For example, from Brnik Airport, you can fly directly to Scandinavia, Greece, Spain, or Great Britain, etc. For each country there is a wide range of InterRail offers, which are no longer aimed just at young people but also at travellers of all ages. Prices are dependent on the passenger's age, and the planned duration of the travel period. This is without doubt the most cost-efficient way to get to know a country.

So, whenever you decide to travel by plane, also consider taking parts of your journey by train. Full details regarding timetables and prices are available from the Slovenian Railways website, www.slo-zeleznice.si, and from information centres at railway stations in Ljubljana, Celje, Maribor and Koper.
