Explore Italy with Slovenske železnice and Arriva
Slovenske železnice – Potniški promet teamed up with the Arriva Group to bring you new travel links (bus) to Italy.
With the start of the 2016/2017 timetable period on 11 December, shuttle bus services will run between Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana and Trieste to connect with high-speed trains in Italy for easy access to various Italian cities. For example, a trip to Milano from Ljubljana will take about 6 hours to complete, while the Ljubljana-Rome journey shouldn’t be more than 7 and a half hours long.
Slovenske železnice works hard to add new destinations to its international passenger journeys. To find a way around issues that hinder running direct trains to Italy, we partnered up with Arriva to develop a new line of services called »Arriva Express«, which features buses running daily between Ljubljana and Trieste train stations to connect with La Frecca high-speed trains on the Italian side. This way, the romantic city of Rome is but 7 hours away, while the magic of Milano shouldn't take longer than 6 hours to reach. Many other cities, such as Venice, Padua, Bologna, Florence and Torino, are also far easier to get to now.
The Ljubljana-Trieste bus service calls daily at 07:40 and 15:25 at the stop Ljubljana bus station - platform 28, and takes about an hour and 35 minutes to complete the ride, with return services to Ljubljana departing from Trieste at 12:55 and 19:30*. Between 1 June and 30 September, the evening return service will be retimed at 22:00 instead of 19:30.
What's more, these links to Italy are an excellent opportunity to catch the overnight train running directly to France's capital, Paris. Make your way to Venice from Ljubljana at 15:25 and reach Paris the next morning at 09:55 aboard the Thello sleeper train service, which comprises both sleeper and couchette cars. The return sleeper leaves from Paris at 19:14, and you should be back in Ljubljana by 14:35 the following day.
The bus services provided by Slovenske železnice and Arriva run according to international train timetable, which means that your train ticket, which includes mandatory seat reservation, also applies to your bus journey.
The Ljubljana-Trieste bus ticket totals €9.00 for adults and €4.5 for children aged 6 to 12, while children under 6 years of age can travel free of charge.
Tickets from Trieste to other Italian cities can be purchased at the InfoCentres in the train stations of Ljubljana, Celje, Koper and Maribor, and from other international station ticket offices.
