Slovenske železnice has its own telecommunication system which is mainly used for the management of railway traffic and the operations of Slovenske železnice.
Due to the outdated and worn out analogue telecommunication network, a project for setting up a modern digital telecommunication network was initiated in 1996. Today, in the main railway cross 567 km of optical cable is suspended from the poles of the catenary, with this cable being the basis for the operations of digital systems and devices. Extensive changes also included the replacement of the entire railway analogue telephone network in the main railway cross in which modern ISDN exchanges now operate. These also enable the transmission of data, images and sound. The outdated station telecommunication systems also lived to see their replacement. The maintenance and supervision over the entire network is enabled by the control centre in Ljubljana. Management of the network from a single place provides a better overview of the network and enables the faster and cheaper elimination of any errors. Currently, 80% of the main railway lines are equipped with radio despatching communications, enabling communication between the engine driver and the transport dispatcher. In the area of radio communications, the introduction of the GSM-R system which is already used in other European countries is being considered.
